What does Mississippi say about homeschool?

The state of Mississippi does not have too many requirements for families wishing to homeschool. There is not a requirement of days or hours that must be met. The family must simply withdraw from the public school system if they are currently enrolled, and send in an attendance verification form informing the state that the child will be homeschooled.

Homeschool  is an alternative to traditional school. It is a great option for many students that wish to be challenged more, struggling through traditional school, or for a family wishing to take more ownership of their child's education. Homeschool affords the student and family to study subjects that are of interest to them at a pace that suits the student!

Homeschool is not traditional school done at home. Not every one in the "classroom" will work on the same thing. There will not always be traditional grades or traditional tests. Often times that only stresses the student out and does not actually encourage true learning.

Curriculum:

Preschool and Kindergarten students should be allowed to play and explore while learning. Students will explore things such as animals, farms, construction, community helpers, volcanoes, dinosaurs, etc. while learning their numbers and letters through play and things they are interested in. In addition to unit studies, students this age will utilize Abeka for a quality phonics and reading curriculum.

1st through 3rd grade will use a program called Rooted in Reading to develop important reading skills and Imagine Math which does an amazing job of relating math to the real world. For science and social studies, our early elementary students will explore units of study to begin to develop an idea of what truly interests them in those areas of study.

Fourth through Sixth grade will explore reading strategies, writing techniques, and grammar lessons through novels. Students will choose from a list of novels that fit into the specific genre of study, but it allows the student some ownership to choose a book they will enjoy! For math, these students will also utilize Imagine Math. Students in upper elementary will be allowed to explore different options for science and social studies. The student, educator, staff, and parents will explore options to choose what best suits the student!

Junior High and High School students will also utilize novels to further develop reading and writing skills. The main curriculum for math will be Math Nation with supplemental resources added as needed. Our high school students will also be given the opportunity to choose science and history topics.
